Sarah Murray earned a Master's degree in Violin Performance from the College of Music at the University of Colorado and a Bachelor's degree summa cum laude in Violin Performance from Valparaiso University. Her teachers were Gregory Maytan and Oswald Lehnert. She was a winner of the Valparaiso University concerto competition in 2006, and performed Beethoven’s Romance in F as violin soloist with the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Murray has toured Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary and China with youth orchestras. She was a member of the Blue Lake International Symphony Orchestra, and attended the Stamford International Music Festival in Stamford, England. Other performance experience has been with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. She recently was a member of the CU West African Highlife Ensemble.
With ten years experience teaching all ages and abilities, Ms. Murray provides creative and fun violin lessons that build a love for music and life. She is a registered Suzuki Violin Teacher, and also a gifted piano accompanist for her violin students. Ms. Murray was a violin sectional coach at the Chamber Intensive Camp at Valparaiso University. She gained further teaching experience as a mentor to the High Plains Youth Symphony violin section in Colorado. A patient and encouraging teacher, she taught music to a child with developmental disabilities through “Imagine!", a Community Centered Board in Boulder and Broomfield counties in Colorado.
Ms. Murray's undergraduate institution placed emphasis on undergraduate research. Her research included: a program note essay on J.S. Bach's Cantata No. 61, published by the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University, and a music pedagogy paper on the challenges of reading music. In her junior year, she received the Lumina Award for Scholastic Achievement and was inducted into Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honor society. In addition to these achievements, she was awarded the Betty Gehring String Award for exceptional leadership and service to the Valparaiso University Symphony Orchestra.
Love of music runs in her family. Ms. Murray’s father, aunt, grandfather and grandmother each received music degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington. Her six siblings also play violin and piano, and they often perform together.
Ms. Murray currently teaches violin lessons privately and at the Rocky Mountain Center for Musical Arts in Lafayette, CO. She also enjoys performing with the Orelia String Quartet, a group of professional musicians who met while studying at the College of Music of the University of Colorado.
